Smoke matches are primarily used in the plumbing industry in the UK to test boilers and ventilation shafts for leaks. The match is also used to test smoke alarms. The smoke match produced by Octavius Hunt is designed when lit to emit a steady stream of smoke for 18 seconds.

Smoke Match Specification
The smoke match must possess the following characteristics:

 Maximum match length of 50 mm
 Splint size of 48mm x 2mm x 2mm
 A white smoke will be emitted when burnt
 No flaming will occur when burning
 Minimum burn time of 18 seconds
 The match will have a brown/grey main composition with a red ignition tip. When struck the tip shall flame and ignite the main composition which will burn without flaming to completion.
