The product was originally developed for Zeneca to fulfil a specific market requirement in Latin America. Zeneca needed a smoke pesticide product to clean pests from farmhouses in the Pampa, where there were huge spaces with high ceilings and high insect pressure. Octavius Hunt formulated and developed the product to a clear brief; the smoke tablet had to produce lots of smoke because the consumer associated smoke with effectiveness, it had to be of high quality and be reliable as this is something that consumers had come to expect from other Zeneca products in the market, the product had to deal with the target pests effectively and had to be very low in cost as the market was particularly price sensitive.

The solution was the Cypermethrin Smoke Tablet; a completely unique product, unlike anything else on the market, which produced high levels of visible smoke and met Zeneca's criteria in every way.

Each tablet is wrapped in a specialist polymer sleeve that can be used to ignite the tablet. The consumer therefore does not need to come into contact with the pesticide, this provides a positive stewardship message to both consumers and regulators.

The product has been a great success in Latin America since launch in 1995 where sales have been in excess of 1,000,000 per year.

Characteristics
Each tablet produces a cloud of smoke that lifts the insecticide, depositing it in all the corners and cracks in the treated space, covering the most inaccessible locations. Its action is immediate and residual. Activity will continue for some days after its application against insect that contact the product. One tablet will treat a normal room of 25 cubic metres.

Each 50g Smoke Tablet contains 1.3% active ingredient, burns for approximately 70 seconds and produces a volume of smoke, which delivers the active ingredient Cypermethrin. Cypermethrin is a broad spectrum pyrethroid, well known by regulators worldwide to have a good toxicological and environmental profile. The Cypermethrin Tablet is effective against cockroaches, spiders, beetles, fleas, triatomids, lice, moths, flies and mosquitoes.
